King's Justice

Day 61

Johnathan said I should look beyond the things in front of me, and so I looked beyond. My mind stood a bit straighter since my nightmare.

The great hall held more people than it did for the trial. The windows were covered with my banners and little light shone in, yet everything was clear. Lords, Ladies, merchants and mayors of villages stood in line for my audience. Problems, big and small, were presented, and I were to solve them. Every moon I would hold greetings like these, where the common folk, knights and lords would come seeking aid.

It was raining outside, a strangely cold day for summer.

Both Emily and I wore our silver, royal blue tunics, which I despised. Their saving grace was that in them, Emily looked even more graceful. She had a tired smile on her lip. While my mind cleared hers seemed to have been even more troubled. My optimism toward finding Eclaire helped her only a little.

Thunder crossed the sky as lord after lord approached.

"I have proof that my lord brother is a demon, your Highness," Lady Sophia Lyson spoke.

Her brother was sworn to Luke.

"A sellsword is carrying the evidence here as we speak!"

I knew her brother. He was old enough to fight in the War of the Divided. Blamed himself for his father’s death, an honest lad he was. Since then he has served the crown with pride and honor.

"There has been no record of demon possession since the war," Agrippa dismissed her.

"What is this proof?" Emily asked.

"His medical records, my Queen," she said.

"When will this sellsword arrive?" I asked.

"By dawn, your Grace," the lady said.

I looked at her for a moment.

"If the proof you have is enough for all three of us to conclude what you have, then we will act upon it. Is that sufficient?"

After what had happened to Paul, I cannot go around beheading lords on a whim.

"I hope you will see what I did." Having said her piece, she bowed and left.

Our special guest for the time was Lord Mohamed Zahaf. While a "Lord" he was not, that was his title while he was staying. The younger brother of the richest Caliph from Ahram, he said he was here bringing dire news. His brother was almost killed by an assassin. Poison, which most people don't survive. Their court mage had saved him, something that bothered his protector, an albino warrior. Seems they are becoming more and more popular.

"A great storm is coming, my friend," he said, "and we should stand against it."

He was a shorter, thin man with bronze darker skin, dark curly hair and brown eyes. His smile was pleasant and friendly and his voice energetic. As far as court guests go, I have known few better.

He, Emily, Agrippa, and I will dine tonight. There, he will tell us of the dire times.

Lord Duncan of Midmarch and Lord Henry of the Forest of the Chosen plead their cases before me.

I sat on the king’s throne, Emily on her queen’s throne, Agrippa in the counselor’s chair, while Lord Zahaf was on a plain guest’s chair.
